An air source heat pump, sometimes referred to as an air-to-water source heat pump, transfers heat from the outside air to water, which heats your rooms via radiators or underfloor heating. It can also heat water stored in a hot water cylinder for your hot taps, showers and baths.

Heat pumps are more efficient than other heating systems because the amount of heat they produce is more than the amount of electricity they use.

The cost of an air source heat pump varies depending on the size of heat pump, the size of the property, whether it’s a new build or an existing property, as well as whether you need to change the way you distribute heat around your property.

Are Heat pumps big?

Heat pumps need less space than two wheelie bins stood side-by-side. That’s around 1.5 metres wide

Heat pumps work in all types of homes and still work well in those that have less insulation. When you speak to a heat pump installer, they’ll assess your home and set your heat pump to work with your house type and heating needs.

Heat pumps need no more maintenance than a gas boiler. Just like with a gas boiler, we recommend an annual service for your heat pump

In England and Wales, you can get up to £7,500 of government funding towards a heat pump (other funding options available for Scotland and Northern Ireland).

It depends:

  • how heat pumps work.
  • how much they usually cost to install and run.
  • what kind of heat pump might be right for you.

There are two types of heat pump that are most common in the UK:

    • air source heat pumps
    • ground source heat pumps

Which one is better suited to you largely depends on your budget and how much space you have.

  • The average air or ground temperature where the heat pump is.

This largely depends on what heating system you’re replacing.

Generally, the high efficiency of heat pumps means that it should be cheaper to run than most other fuel types.

If you have a gas boiler (or often an oil boiler in Northern Ireland), heat pumps are likely to be slightly more expensive to run.

But, as energy prices fluctuate over time, we expect that heat pumps will become the cheapest as well as the lowest carbon form of heating available
