How it works

A home charge point is a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to a wall-mounted unit, typically rated at 7kW on a single-phase domestic supply. That is considerably faster than a standard socket and is designed for repeated use at full load, which a domestic socket is not.

Most units can be scheduled, so charging happens on an overnight tariff rather than at peak rates. Where solar is fitted, some chargers can prioritise your own generation, drawing from the grid only to top up.

Installation depends on the capacity of your existing supply and consumer unit. Where the supply is already heavily loaded, load management may be needed so that the charger reduces its draw when the rest of the house is busy.

02Agree the charge point position and cable route, taking account of where you park and how the cable will reach.

03Specify the unit, including whether solar-priority charging or load management is needed.

04Install, test and commission the circuit, and notify the District Network Operator as required.

05Set up the app or scheduling, and hand over the electrical certificate.

Worth knowing before you commit

Your supply may need checking

Adding a 7kW load to a property that already has electric heating or a heat pump sometimes requires load management or, occasionally, a supply upgrade. This is checked before quoting.

Earthing arrangements

Outdoor charge points have specific earthing requirements. Most units now handle this internally, but the existing arrangement is inspected at survey.

Grant funding

Charge point grants exist for some households, particularly flats and rental properties. Eligibility changes, so we check the current position rather than relying on what was true last year.
