Loft, cavity wall and internal wall insulation

Insulation measures that reduce heat loss, carried out alongside our heating and renewables work.

How it works

Insulation slows the rate at which heat escapes from a building. Where it goes depends on the property: uninsulated lofts and uninsulated cavity walls are usually the largest and most straightforward losses to address.

Loft insulation is laid between and across the ceiling joists. Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between the inner and outer leaf of a cavity wall, and is only appropriate where the cavity is suitable and the wall is in good condition. Internal wall insulation is fitted to the inside face of a solid wall, and reduces room dimensions slightly.

Insulation and heating work together. Heat loss determines what size of heating system a property needs, so insulating first can mean a smaller and less expensive heat pump.

What we do on a job like this

  1. 01Inspect the loft, walls and existing insulation, and identify where the meaningful losses are.
  2. 02Check wall construction and condition before recommending cavity fill, including whether the cavity is suitable.
  3. 03Set out which measures are worth doing and, where relevant, which are not.
  4. 04Install the measure and leave the guarantee documentation for the system fitted.

Worth knowing before you commit

Cavity fill is not right for every wall
Exposure, wall condition and existing damp problems can all make cavity fill unsuitable. A wall that is already suffering penetrating damp should not be filled.
Ventilation matters
Reducing heat loss without considering ventilation can cause condensation and mould. Ventilation is assessed as part of any insulation work.
